Rabies is here and it has become a REAL threat to both Pueblo County residents and their pets. Pueblo Animal Services and the Pueblo City-County Health Department remind individuals that vaccination against rabies is mandatory for all dogs and cats in Pueblo County.

# of Home Quarantine cases to date: 1 2012 total: 55 ---these are the CURRENTLY vaccinated animals who came in contact with a possible rabid animal ~~~~~or~~~~~ ---animals who had several previous vaccines but were expired at the time of contact with a possible rabid animal
# of Strict Quarantine cases to date: 1 2012 total: 8 ---these are the animals who were under vaccinated and owners choose to pay for strict quarantine at a facility for 90 days (~$900 or more) with an additional 90 days at home
# of Animals Euthanized to date: 0 2012 total: 19 ---Sadly these are animals who were under vaccinated and could not be put in quarantine due to extenuating circumstances.

RABID SKUNK IN CONTACT WITH PETS IN CITY OF PUEBLO
20th Street and Court Street on the north side of Pueblo
Environmental Health Director Health Maio stated, "In order to protect the community as we see more and more rabid skunks in Pueblo, it is important pet owners take individual responsibility to vaccinate their pets and follow the licensing and leash laws."
Rabid skunks have been picked up by the Pueblo City-County Health Department near Mineral Palace Park and Lake Minnequa this week in Pueblo.
